I first started to question my own deeply held beliefs about the role of oil in U.S. foreign policy more than two decades ago. Identifying all the people I have discussed and argued these matters with, texted, and learned from and who hosted talks and workshops, commissioned essays, and made me rethink things is daunting. The folks I remember and owe a debt of thanks are Osman Balkan, Duccio Basosi, Alex Beasley, Joel Beinin, Arthur van Benthem, Dan Bessner, Elisabetta Bini, Rosie Bsheer, Nate Citino, Juan Cole, Jeff Colgan, Pat Conge, Zach Cuyler, Joel Darmstadter, Chris Dietrich, Tim Di Muzio, Gaetano Di Tommaso, Manuel Dorion-Soulié, Kaveh Ehsani, Rusti Eisenberg, Noura Erakat, Anusar Farooqui, Tom Ferguson, Ted Fertik, Irene Gendzier, Avery Goldstein, Joel Gordon, Vicky de Grazia, Guy Grossman, Bassam Haddad, Deborah Harrold, Waleed Hazbun, Jim Henson, Mike Horowitz, Aida Hozic, Meg Jacobs, Toby Jones, Lola Jusidman, Arang Keshavarzian, Assaf Kfoury, Laleh Khalili, Zuhair Khan, Philip Khoury, Michael Klare, Atul Kohli, Bruce Kuklick, Mazen Labban, Mark LeVine, Zach Lockman, Roger Louis, Shana Marshall, Melani McAlister, Victor McFarland, Tom Meaney, Emily Meierding, Yoram Meital, Pascal Menoret, Fareed Mohamedi, Marta Musso, Greg Nowell, Gwenn Okruhlik, Ido Oren, Roger Owen, Patrick Porter, Barry Posen, Daryl Press, Haggai Ram, Sayres Rudy, Madawi al-Rasheed, Peter Rutland, Andrew Schlossberg, Adam Shatz, Cyrus Schayegh, Relli Shechter, Nate Shills, Ahmad Shokr, Ben Smith, Roger Stern, Ted Swedenburg, Dawn Teele, Peter Trubowitz, Alex Weisiger, Stephen Wertheim, Brandon Wolfe-Hunnicutt, and Marilyn Young.
I won’t ever forget the ten friends and colleagues who took time from their own work late in the spring and summer of 2019 to write detailed comments on and criticisms of the entire manuscript. Their generosity reminds me of what I love about the academy even in these dismal times. I thank Samer Abboud, Jason Brownlee, Giuliano Garavini, Greg Gause, Ellis Goldberg, Clem Henry, Ian Lustick, Mike Lynch, Tim Mitchell, and David Painter.
I have had the singular honor to work with Kate Wahl and her colleagues at Stanford University Press, not once but twice. She is the best editor I know, and the press is a vital national resource.
I wrote the book on the third floor of our house in Mount Airy, at McMenamin’s Tavern, at Uncle Bobbie’s in Germantown, at Starbucks in Chestnut Hill, and for a few mornings at the Flourtown Swim Club. It is the first one I’ve written without decamping for weeks at a stretch to work in various archives. So I didn’t need anybody’s money this time. I couldn’t have done it, though, without JSTOR and ProQuest. But I took a sabbatical and borrowed on a future one (who knew?), so my thanks go to Anne Norton and Rogers Smith for arranging it.
Streaming music has messed things up for me, because the choices are now limitless, but while writing I kept returning to Phoebe Bridgers, Ferron, I Think Like Midnight, Lianne La Havas, Kendrick Lamar, Lee Morgan, Kacey Musgraves, Oliver Nelson, Horace Silver, the Stylistics, Taylor Swift, Thundercat, and Neil Young’s archive releases.
